Henry Neave's Active-Learning Course:
“When your mind internalizes this framework, and it begins to shape your thinking, the learning–the natural accumulation of knowledge – really begins.”
The framework I’m talking about is the Deming framework for the transformation of management. It's the management framework of all management frameworks. I provide an introduction to it, Deming, and my friend, Henry Neave in this essay.
Henry’s course, 12 Days to Deming, is an excellent way to absorb the framework into your thinking, and thereby into your managing and continued learning.
It captures Henry’s own experiences while working side-by-side with Deming and as he mastered Deming’s teachings. It also reflects his own dedication to the subject; a dedication further exhibited by his generosity in making this course available free of charge.
Deming had a knack for brilliant yet practical thinking with an equally brilliant commitment to bring it to the world. Henry has a knack for making the brilliance accessible through his style of writing; ours to appreciate in this course and his great book, The Deming Dimension.
I mention in the essay that Henry accelerated my own journey along the path to this knowledge by 7 to 10 years [1]. You can do yourself a favor and let it happen for you too by downloading 12 Days and getting started (again, at no charge).
The Floworks is an effective way to learn Deming as you put his ideas to work for your company. Henry’s comprehensive course and book are a great way to enhance your study of Deming and bolster your hands-on learning. If you are a newcomer, take heart; 12 Days is designed with you in mind. But even if you have embraced Deming for years, it will help solidify what you know, and expand your horizon for what is next; as you know, the learning only ends where you let it stop.
Great companies are built on the thinking and guidance that form this framework, Toyota being the preeminent example. Your company can be one of them whether you are in manufacturing like Toyota, or a small service-based company.
The course is designed to accommodate self-study, but it works well in group-study too. The Floworks is available to coordinate and facilitate face-to-face study groups here in central Ohio. Virtual study groups are also available.
Please email if you would like to be part of a study group. Alternatively just get started on your own; you can contact us if you get stuck at info@thefloworks.com.

For reasons that Henry explains in the 12 Days introductory material, and as evidenced by the name, the course is laid out in days, as in day-of-study-at-8-hours-per-day (a Day). Because of the material's interconnected nature (i.e., one idea building on another, connected to the next), Henry recommends that it be tackled at frequent intervals and no less than a half-Day at a time. Try to complete at least one Day per week, or three or four Days per week if you don't currently have a full-time commitment.
12 Days to Deming is laid out as shown below under "COURSE CONTENT" with a PDF download for each section. Henry painstakingly formatted the material for printing and placing in a binder. Personally, I uploaded the course to a handwriting app on my iPad called Notability. However you might choose to do it, Henry provides great detail for preparing the material for the student so that the learning can begin. Just be sure to begin with the Welcome Booklet.
[1] It’s probably more accurate to say that Henry accelerated my journey to knowledge immeasurably but for some reason I feel compelled to put a number to it. Seven-to-ten years is my best estimate.
